Scratcher of heads, rubber of bellies
Thousands of years ago a visiting Cyclops commemorated their love of the Pacific Northwest by crafting a self-portrait, the only known example still in existence today. I had the pleasure of photographing it in 2013 and was surprised by how delicate and fragile it was given the powerful force that created it, suggesting Homer’s portrayal of the Cyclopes as ignorant brutes in The Odyssey was little more than slander.
Must’ve been quite the party, hope it was worth it!
Taken in the fading light at the end of a lovely fall day in 2017 at Heceta Head on the Oregon coast.
Away from the large tide pools was this little one, two small rocks covered in acorn barnacles and limpets and the occasional snail, with one giant green anemone growing beside.
Rocks worn smooth by the motion of the ocean make the climb up Ruby Beach in Olympic National Park to join the many others on the rocky beach, leaving patterns in the sand after the waves flow around them. Or maybe, after days of heavy rain, they were taking advantage of the sunshine to head down to the ocean for a refreshing swim in the Pacific.
A dog’s footprints stretched out before me as I walked along Rialto Beach in Olympic National Park. They weren’t from my dog as Ellie was at home a state away, but my trip was nearing its end and soon enough we would be back walking side-by-side.
