The Missing Sam Formation

A black-and-white image of our cats Boo and Trixie resting beside each other on the couch, with Boo stretched towards the camera and Trixie sitting further back. Taken on April 11, 2022. Original: _Z721640.NEF

Days after Sam died a couple of years ago, two cats trying to figure out life without big brother. Boo will let Trixie snuggle against his back when he’s curled up on my legs but we’ve only had one cat that would have tolerated her climbing on him and smashing her face into his and fortunately for Trixie that was Samwise. I’ve tried my best to be a Sam Substitute but I am the palest of imitations.

Looking for the Light

Trixie the day after Sam died. She was so tightly bonded to him I knew his death would be hard on her, as it was with Scout when Templeton died and with Sam when Scout died.

Trix & Pink Mouse

Our cat Trixie crouches next to her favorite toy, pink mouse on July 22, 2022. Original: _Z723588.NEF

We bought pink mouse way back when Scout was a kitten but it was Emma and now Trixie who really loved it and played with it in similar fashion. In the dark of night you can hear muffled mews as she carries it about, come morning her friend will be lying somewhere new.

Waiting For Walkies

Another picture from quarantine a couple of years ago. I was feeling better by this point but my wife had gotten sick so we stayed in isolation. Bear was still pretty new and I preferred to keep him on leash even in our fenced backyard, but when I saw Trixie watching the backyard through the curtains it looked like she was waiting for her turn.

I’m Not Mad, Just Disappointed

Our cat Trixie looks a little angry as she relaxes on the futon on December 23, 2023. Original: _A672440.ARW

I forget why we had the futon laid out as a bed, but back in December I took a quick snap of Trixie relaxing on it, even if her expression says otherwise.

Time to Move

Our cat Trixie relaxes on a pillow in front of the window in my office on March 29, 2024. Original: _Z727637.NEF

The other night Trixie was sleeping on a pillow in front of my office window when a flash of light and a loud bang sent her scurrying from the room, without even looking I knew she’d be hiding under the bed. The thunderstorm raged for a surprisingly long time, rattling the windows and one tortoiseshell’s nerves. By 1 a.m. with the weather calmed she finally emerged to wake us up and let us know it was long past time to move back to Oregon.
