When the weather outside is frightful, don’t forget to check on your neighbors to make sure they’re OK. I was worried about this old fellow but, while he didn’t say a word, he wore the same thoughtful if bemused expression he always has, no matter the circumstances. I left him to his musings.
An old windswept tree at Seal Rock on the Oregon coast, barely hanging onto the cliffside and to life. Much of the fragile ground has already crumbled away beneath its roots, leaving them exposed, but its remaining roots still help hold the ground in place.
We have two large maple trees between the sidewalk and the street, last winter brought white snow on top of the green moss on top of the brown bark.

Long ago a large tree fell over beside the Hall of Mosses Trail in the Hoh Rain Forest, forming a nurse log for younger trees to grow on. Some of those younger trees fell too and the park staff cut them with chain saws, they were probably blocking the trail, and behind them in the clearing you can see a tree that has naturally broken partway up the trunk. This will provide even more light into the clearing, allowing different types of plants and trees to grow before old giants eventually rise up again.
