Here Comes the Tide

I had many thoughts as the ocean covered my feet as I photographed the incoming tide washing over the starfish, anemones, and mussels attached to this large rock. My first thought was that I need to get some tall waterproof boots (which reminds me, I need to get some tall waterproof boots). But mostly I was just amazed that any creatures could survive in this spot, sometimes in air, sometimes in water, and that I could stand in this spot for a hundred years and still not fully understand the little ecosystem right in front of me.

Dinner

Everyone gets their dinner as an elk calf nurses from its mother while she and another cow eat the grasses of Elk Meadow in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

The Glowing Moss

This heavy moss on a redwood tree was almost glowing in the diffuse sunlight. At some point someone or something had brushed against the tree, knocking a chunk of moss from the bark, but time heals all wounds and the moss will one day reclaim the open space.

Life Imitates Life

After spending so much time photographing shore crabs in a tide pool at Lagoon Creek in Redwood National Park, it amused me to find a crab made of rockweed on the way back to the trail. It amused me further when reviewing the pictures after I got home, after not noticing while on the beach that one of the real crabs was missing one of its large front claws, that I hadn’t noticed this false crab was also missing a front claw.

A lovely case of life imitating life.
