The Best or the Worst?

The head of an alligator sits above the water with plant material on its head in the freshwater marsh of Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina on July 7, 2005. Original: IMG_1558.cr2

Sixteen years later and these pictures still make me smile, wondering if this is the world’s best toupee or the worst? The teeth were real enough, of which the crabs in the freshwater marsh were well aware (or were about to be).

Logs in the Marsh

A close-up of the back scales of an American alligator as it floats in the freshwater marsh of Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina on July 7, 2005. Original: IMG_1649.cr2

I found a log floating in a marsh in South Carolina with the most wondrous patterns and textures. I don’t know what kind of tree it came from but I’d guess its bite is worse than its bark.

Master of Disguise

Already masters of hiding in the swamp, this alligator went the extra mile by covering its head in plants. Either that or it’s the worst toupee I’ve ever seen.

Hidden Treasure

An American alligator, nearly hidden in the marsh, is illuminated by the rising sun

The golden light of the rising sun begins filtering through the trees, illuminating a treasure hidden in the marsh.
