Bargaining With God

Our dog Ellie looks up while laying on her homemade dog bed in the living room of our house in Portland, Oregon on Halloween in October 2014

Our Heavenly Father,

Please let me live a long and happy life so I can look after my family no matter where they go. In return I promise I’ll be a good girl and not steal any pizza off the counter. Except I really like pizza and I know they want me to be happy and also someone needs to test it to make sure it hasn’t been poisoned. How about I promise not to steal any vegetables off the counter, they can cover it from one end to the other with broccoli and carrots and I won’t take a bite.

Also, I’m sorry I ate the entire batch of freshly baked cookies. And the tub of caramel. And …

Ellie on the Hardwood

Our dog Ellie rests on her stomach on the hardwood floor on a summer evening in July 2013

Since she always wanted to be near us, we kept a dog bed in most rooms of the house so Ellie would have a comfortable spot to sleep no matter where we were. Sometimes though she preferred either the tile or the hardwood floor, perhaps because it was cooler. This was taken on a July evening 6 years ago at our house in Portland, long before we added air conditioning, so the cooler floor probably was an attraction.

When Boo met Emma

Our cat Emma pins her ears back as she greets newly arrived kitten Boo

As you can probably guess by her pinned back ears, Emma was not happy about the arrival of young Boo in July of 2013. As she stormed off he arched his back and his tail got awfully thick as the little fellow made himself look as big as possible. He instinctively understood that he was going to have to make nice with the queen and did his best to get on her good side.

Our kitten Boo arches his back and fluffs out his tail after Emma hissed at him when they met

The Door to Adore

Our kitten Sam sits in front of the door of the guest bedroom beside a toy mouse

Sam a week after we adopted him in 2007. He and Emma stayed in the guest bedroom the first couple of weeks, giving the new arrivals time to bond, but he was getting awfully curious about the cat on the other side of the door, a cat he would adore the rest of her life.

A Little Fun

The past couple of days have been so disheartening, let me share a little joy, young Samwise playing with a toy mouse shortly after we adopted him in 2007. He and Emma brought happiness after we mourned the death of our beloved Templeton.
