As hot as it’s been in Scottsdale, it gets hotter when two furry furnaces are sleeping on your legs. I wouldn’t have it any other way. A quick snap with my iPhone a couple of nights ago, I was going hiking in 5 hours and struggling to join Sam and Trixie in slumber. My two sleep advisors suggested taking a nap in the afternoon and I’ve done that the past three days, an early hike then a swim then a nap. It’s worked out wonderfully but not tomorrow, don’t think they’d appreciate that at work.

All That is Good
When we adopted Boo in the summer of 2013 we knew he was a sensitive fellow who was stressed by his time at the shelter and would need a slow introduction to the other cats. Despite the long history of cats and dogs he took to Ellie quickly, here curled up tight beside her as she slept on her dog bed. He especially loved taking her spot when she got up, reveling in the warmth left behind, and if she came back and found the bed occupied she’d quietly lay down beside the bed rather than try to get Boo to move. She was all that is good.

You Are The Everything
I’m very scared for this world,
I’m very scared for me.
R.E.M., “You Are The Everything”
Trixie was increasingly on edge in the month prior to the move. When the movers arrived the day before, we kept her in the bathroom with her brothers while they packed up our belongings and loaded them on the truck. The next morning as I loaded up the cars, she sat beside the glass door watching me come and go. I was afraid she was going to try to get outside but she never did, it was her way of trying to relieve the stress. Brother Sam came up and laid down beside her and, in the shadow of her hero, she was able to find some solace. Scout used to do this for Sam, so it was heartwarming to see him return the favor and even gain some comfort himself from his young sister.
The movers arrived yesterday to deliver our things to our rental house and it amused me to see this scene play out again in the evening, with Sam curling up with Trixie as she slept in my office.
Shelter Me, My Brother, and Protect Me From All Harm
Trixie has been a bit on edge lately as she knows something is up from all the sorting we’ve been doing the past couple of weeks. She’s always adored our eldest cat Sam and seeks him out to snuggle with him, but never as much as now. Seeing them like this reminds me of how much comfort Sam took from Scout when he was younger.
Moving in the Right Direction
I meant to post this yesterday in honor of the 10 year anniversary of the day we adopted Sam and Emma but I ran out of energy in the early evening. Sam is responding well to the new food with extra fiber, he hasn’t had diarrhea in about four days and his stools have improved as he’s transitioned to the new food. His appetite has been good but there is still room for improvement, and we’ll see how he does overall when he’s been on the new food over time. I had a dream a couple of weeks ago that consisted, in its entirety, of me scooping litter boxes and judging Sam’s poop, so I’m looking forward to when this twice daily activity becomes routine again and the little fellow is feeling better.
If he looks gaunt in this picture, he wasn’t, he’s just sunken down between my legs. He’s curled up on my lap at the moment with Trixie just coming in to snuggle up next to her hero.
